As Morant i Ariño (2012) has pointed out, scholars have condemned the suggestion of using Gender in studies about war, diplomacy, Politics and others. Taking this into account, the Seminar History and Gender: Women under authoritarian regimes seeks to discuss how women’s lives may have been affected by dictatorships, the resistance movements, citizenship concepts and any other aspects related with the constraint of civil rights. Also, who were the women who supported those regimes? How did they engage in their propaganda? The main idea is to debate how the ideologies of the regimes were translated into real Politics and their consequences. The Seminar is interested in works of any geography, but mainly focused on the 20th century. We encourage proposals about Women’s History, but also History of Childhood, Queer identities, and Gender Politics.
About the AIRN Seminar
The African Ivory Research Network (AIRN) runs a seminar at the Centre for History of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon. This seminar addresses African ivory from any historical period and from a variety of historical perspectives, including economic history, cultural history, art history, environmental history and archaeology. In addition, it also intends to promote sessions related to heritage preservation, wildlife protection, ecology, law and illegal trade, among other issues relevant to this topic. Contributors to this seminar include academics from around the world who have researched or are researching any topic related to African ivory and are willing to share their research with a wider community of researchers and experts, including sharing ongoing research. The main goal of this seminar is to promote an open discussion on any issue related with African ivory, profiting from the different theoretical frameworks and research interests followed by each speaker. The seminar consists of monthly conferences to be held from January to May including a 50-60 minutes talk followed by a 20-30 minutes discussion. Sessions take place on Wednesdays starting at 6 PM (GMT) in online format, via zoom, although some may be in hybrid format (see below). Hybrid sessions take place at the School of Arts and Humanities, Room B112.G (limited availability). AIRN is an offspring of a joint research project developed by the universities of Lisbon and Minas Gerais on the history of African ivories in the Atlantic world, which was carried out between 2016 and 2019 under the supervision of Peter Mark (https://africanivoriesul.wordpress.com/). Call for Papers The Voices of the People Democratic participation in European Urban Centers in the Late Middle Ages May 25-26, 2023 We live in a world of growing debate about the meaning of Democracy. The rise of extreme right-wing parties around the world and the urgent need to discuss liberal democracies place our generations in a key historical moment. It seems to be up also to historians to rethink what we can understand through democratic participation in a collective effort, looking at the past through new points of view.
This event proposes a discussion of the forms of democratic participation encountered by the people of the urban world of the late Middle Ages (XIVth to XVIth centuries). Here lived and worked different social groups, distinguished by their economic and professional status, but also by their greater or lesser capacity to intervene in the management of the res publica. For this purpose, we will host a roundtable discussion followed by a conference. In these events, we will count on the participation of 4 keynote speakers - distinguished historians within the European historiography on these themes - and 8 lecturers who will propose their papers. The Call for Papers for The Voices of the People. Democratic participation in European Urban Centers in the Late Middle Ages is open to all researchers who study the Middle Ages from various perspectives: history, art history, archaeology, philosophy, literature, and sociology... The conference will take place on the 25th and the 26th of May 2023 in the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon. Each proposal will be evaluated by a scientific committee and the results will be announced by the end of March 2023. All proposals should fall within one of the following thematic strands:
Please, send your proposal by accessing the following link: Call for Papers - The Voices of the People The deadline for submission of proposals is 12th of February 2023 (Extended deadline). Each participant will be allowed a 20 minutes presentation followed by a discussion. The working languages are English (preferably), Portuguese, Castilian, and French. Organized by Marco Alexandre Ribeiro and the Cultural Encounters and Intersecting Societies Research Group.
